Does
anyone know where the name Sloppy Joe came from? I have a friend named
Joe... maybe I should ask his mother. The sandwich was named after the Sloppy Joe's Bar in Havana, Cuba which was the first to serve a sandwich of this variety. In the 1930s Mayor Sweeny, the then Mayor of Maplewood visited the Sloppy Joe's Bar and Eatery in Cuba and instantly fell in love with the sandwich. On his return to the U.S. he introduced this sandwich there. He asked his cooks to make it using Cole slaw, cow tongue and Swiss cheese to be served with thin rye bread with lots of Russian dressing. This Bar and Eatery in Cuba was frequented by a lot of Americans including Ernest Hemingway and according to the legend that is how the name Sloppy Joes came about. According to another
theory, Sloppy Joes was not named after any Joe. The word Sloppy comes
from the fact that the sandwich is messy to eat and if one eats it like
a normal sandwich, there is a tendency to drop the meat and sauce all
over the place. And the word Joe refers to the average American, thus
giving the sandwich a popular name. My friend Joe also said it probably goes well with a "cup of Joe." I had no idea he was so famous! :-)
